We are the Chautauqua Fire Department
Chautauqua, New York
For more than 100 Years, A Volunteer Organization
Chautauqua Volunteer Fire Department is a unique department
that is physically located adjacent to the grounds of Chautauqua Institution and
protects approximately 17 square miles of the Town of Chautauqua as well as the
Chautauqua Institution Grounds. We have a winter population of approximately 2,500
and a summer population of up to about 12,000 per week. Our district runs from Magnolia
Road in the South to the Merz Boy Scout Camp in the North and from Chautauqua Lake
on the East to County Road 25 (Morris Road) on the West. We border the fire districts
of Mayville to the north, Ashville to the south and Sherman to the west.
In the Spring of 2006 we moved into our new fire hall. This is
the fourth hall or addition our department has occupied in our over 100 years. The
original building is now a private home across the street from our current station. The
second hall was built in 1946 and had two bays. Three additional bays were added (our
third hall) in 1972.
Our department currently has two engines, one arial ladder truck, one tanker, one ambulance, one rescue vehicle, one command/ALS first response vehicle and a 1 ton misc. pickup.
- Engine 211 is our attack pumper
- Engine 212 is our supply pumper
- Truck 211 is our new 75 foot arial ladder truck that replaces our 1976 LaFrance ladder
- Tanker 211 is a 2000 International chasis with a 4,600 gallon water tank
- Rescue 212 carries our Fire Police, cold water rescue and MVA blocking and misc. equipment
- Misc. 211 is a 2005 Chevy Silverado 1 ton misc. pickup
- Misc. 212 is a 2009 Chevy Tahoe Command and ALS first response vehicle
- Ambulance 211 is a 2001 Braun that runs the vast majority of our calls. In addition to the over 300 EMS calls, Ambulance 211 answers all other calls to which the department responds.
Our roster has over 40 active members and we are always looking for new members who want to join us in protecting the lives and property of our very unique district and it's wonderful residents. We also have over 30 Exempt and Life members who no longer run calls but still are active in the life of the department. Our exempt and life members provide us with a link to our past and also are a valuable source of knowledge and experience we can call on as we continue to train to protect our district.
